Times of Harvey Milk

I finally saw The Times of Harvey Milk movie last night, after knowing about it for years. I first heard of it because I had a copy of the CD “Film Music” by Mark Isham which features parts of the film score. Actually, my dad probably had a copy of that record (record as in VINYL) when I was really young. I remember knowing the name Harvey Milk but I had no idea who he really was or why he was important. I just thought it was a pretty goofy name (because, after all, it is). Anyhow, a few thoughts on the film!

  • Although I’ve known about this movie forEVER, it wasn’t until about five minutes before I saw it that I found out it was a documentary. Thanks Keli. DUH! I was actually assuming it was a drama and also assumed it wasn’t going to be very good.

  • It was good. Really good. I still haven’t seen MILK, but am glad I saw the documentary first.

  • I was never crazy about the 8 minutes of music featured on the above-mentioned CD. But it worked really well with the movie.

  • I had no idea that the Twinkie Defense came from the murder trial! I had obviously heard about the Twinkie Defense, since I only live under a rock part of the time. But I didn’t know it came from such a high profile case.

  • I am probably more interested in learning about Dan White now. Did he really have no history of problems before this? I mean, he went in planning to kill FOUR people when he killed Moscone and Milk. And then he committed suicide shortly after getting out of prison. Based on the short clip of him in City Hall when they were talking about his resignation, he obviously had a serious temper. I’m just curious to know what other things he’d done in the past.

  • The movie starts with a clip of Diane Feinstein telling the press that Moscone and Milk were killed and that another Supervisor was the suspect. That little clip is all it took to really hammer home how huge it was. And it hits a little closer to home since San Francisco is my city.

  • A little crazy to think that we had just moved to the Bay Area a couple months before the riots took place after Dan White’s trial.

  • The footage of the candle light vigil was INSANE and more than a little bit moving. Although I’d like to see something like that in person, I sure hope that nothing happens to inspire something like that in the near future.

That’s all I can think of at the moment. I highly recommend the movie.
